Namaste. 👋

I watched so much of this show that I started dreaming it.

Fifteen seasons. Three hundred and twenty seven episodes. And somewhere deep in the binge my sleeping mind decided the Winchester brothers were real enough to visit. To this day there is at least one episode I cannot confirm actually exists — I genuinely do not know if I watched it or dreamed it. And honestly? I am not sure I want to know.

That is what Supernatural does when it gets its hooks in. It does not just entertain you. It moves in.

The Show

Supernatural is an American dark fantasy series created by Eric Kripke that premiered on The WB in 2005 and ran for fifteen seasons until 2020 — making it the longest running series in The CW's history. It stars Jared Padalecki as Sam Winchester and Jensen Ackles as Dean Winchester — two brothers who travel across America in a black 1967 Chevrolet Impala hunting every creature, demon, god, and cosmic force that threatens the living.

Dean calls the car Baby. She is as much a character as either brother.

The show begins with ghost stories and urban legends and never stops expanding — moving from demons to angels to pagan gods to the Norse pantheon to the full sprawling mythology of every tradition human beings have ever named and feared. And then it goes all the way to God himself.

For someone (me) building a brand organized around The Twelve Laws and the full God Hierarchy — this show felt less like entertainment and more like research.

The Brothers

Sam and Dean Winchester are the reason this show ran for fifteen seasons.

Dean

The eldest.

The protector.

The one who sacrificed his own becoming on the altar of keeping his brother alive. Tough on the surface.

Fathomless underneath. A man who loved with everything he had and could barely say it out loud.

Sam

The youngest.

The one who wanted out.

Who went to college and tried to build a normal life and got pulled back by the same gravity that pulls every person back to what they were born into.

Bookish. Principled. Quietly carrying guilt that no amount of good acts could fully dissolve.

Together they are the template for what brotherhood looks like when it is built on something real. On showing up. On choosing each other over and over across every season and every impossible situation and every moment when walking away would have been easier.

I watched them and felt grief for the brotherhood I wished I had been given. For Trever and me — and the canyon between us that was built by Bob before we had words for what was happening.

Sam and Dean are the template I wished I had been given.

I carry it now. In every blog written for both of us.

Season by Season

Supernatural Season 1 is available on Amazon - Here

Sam Winchester has left hunting behind for Stanford University. Then his brother Dean arrives at his door with news — their father John has gone missing on a hunting trip. The two brothers hit the road in the Impala to find him, crossing the country and encountering the urban legends and ghost stories that their father spent his life investigating. What begins as a search for John becomes something much larger when a yellow-eyed demon connected to the death of their mother resurfaces.

This is where it all begins. Classic horror. Classic brotherhood. The foundation everything else is built on.

The aftermath of Season 1 lands hard and immediately. John Winchester's fate sets the tone for everything that follows — this show does not protect its characters from consequences. Sam begins to discover that the yellow-eyed demon Azazel had a specific plan for him from birth. The mythology deepens. The brothers begin to understand that they are not just hunters. They are pieces in something much larger than either of them chose.

Dean made a deal. One year left to live. Sam is determined to find a way out of it — Dean is determined to make peace with it. This shorter season produced some of the most beloved individual episodes in the entire run. The clock is ticking and every episode carries the weight of what is coming. The finale delivers one of the most devastating moments the show ever produced.

Supernatural Season 4 is available on Amazon - Here

Dean comes back from Hell. He was pulled out — but not by anything human. Enter Castiel. An angel of the Lord. And with him the entire celestial mythology that will define the next several seasons. Sam's powers deepen in ways that begin to frighten even him. The apocalypse is no longer a metaphor. The seals are breaking. Lucifer's cage is rattling. And God — somewhere — is silent.

This is the season most fans point to as the show finding its full power.

Supernatural Season 5 is available on Amazon - Here

The apocalypse arrives. Sam and Dean are told they are destined to be the vessels for Lucifer and Michael — destined to fight each other to the death and end the world. They refuse. This season is the original showrunner Eric Kripke's intended conclusion — and it shows. Everything that was planted in Season 1 pays off here.

The finale is one of the great endings in television history.

Many fans consider this the perfect stopping point. The show continued for ten more seasons. Make of that what you will.

Supernatural Season 6 is available on Amazon - Here

A year has passed. Dean has been living a quiet life. Sam is back — but something is wrong with him. Castiel is fighting a war in Heaven. Their grandfather Samuel has been resurrected under circumstances nobody fully understands.

Season 6 is the beginning of the post-Kripke era and it shows the growing pains of a show that survived past its original ending.

But it also introduces storylines that pay off beautifully in later seasons.

Supernatural Season 7 is available on Amazon - Here

The Leviathans — ancient creatures older than angels that God locked away before creation — are unleashed. Sam is dealing with the aftermath of his time in Lucifer's cage in ways that threaten to break him entirely.

This season is widely considered the most uneven of the run. It has its moments. It also has stretches that test your commitment. Stay with it. What comes after is worth it.

Season 8 (2012—2013) — 23 Episodes

Dean spent a year in Purgatory. He came back changed — harder, more focused, carrying something he cannot fully articulate. The season introduces the Men of Letters and their bunker — which becomes the brothers' first real home base in the entire series. The quest to close the gates of Hell forever drives the season toward one of the most emotionally devastating finales the show ever produced.

Season 9 (2013—2014) — 23 Episodes

[Season 9 Trailer]

The angels have fallen. All of them. Cast out of Heaven and now walking the earth as humans — confused, lost, and dangerous. Castiel must find his way in a world he barely understands without his grace. Dean carries a secret that is slowly destroying him from the inside. The Mark of Cain arrives — and with it a darkness that will take two seasons to fully resolve.

Season 10 (2014—2015) — 23 Episodes

[Season 10 Trailer]

Dean is a demon. Not a metaphor — literally. The Mark of Cain has completed its work and Dean Winchester is now wearing a demon's black eyes and carrying a rage that makes everything before it look manageable. Sam will do anything to get his brother back. Anything. The cost of that anything is something the season takes seriously in ways that lesser shows would not.

Season 11 (2015—2016) — 23 Episodes

[Season 11 Trailer]

The Darkness is released. Amara — God's sister, the force that existed before creation, the thing God locked away before he made everything — is free. And she has a particular connection to Dean that neither of them fully understands. This season also reveals something about Chuck Shurley — the quiet prophet who has been appearing since Season 4 — that reframes everything.

Season 12 (2016—2017) — 23 Episodes

[Season 12 Trailer]

Mary Winchester is back. The brothers' mother — dead since they were children, the originating wound of the entire series — is alive. The British Men of Letters arrive with their own agenda. Lucifer walks the earth in a stolen body. The season finale produces consequences that the show spends the next three seasons dealing with.

Season 13 (2017—2018) — 23 Episodes

[Season 13 Trailer]

Jack — the son of Lucifer and a human woman — arrives as a newborn Nephilim with the power to reshape reality. He is innocent. He is extraordinarily dangerous. And he attaches himself to Sam and Dean with the particular trust of someone who has never been given a reason not to trust. An alternate universe opens. Characters believed lost are found in unexpected places.

Season 14 (2018—2019) — 20 Episodes

[Season 14 Trailer]

Michael — the archangel, wearing Dean's body as a vessel — is loose in the world. The aftermath of his occupation of Dean drives the season's emotional core. Jack's power and his mortality become the central crisis. And at the end of the season God himself arrives — not as a distant presence but as an active, present, and deeply unsettling force in the Winchester story.

Season 15 (2019—2020) — 20 Episodes

[Season 15 Trailer]

The final season. God — Chuck — has been pulling strings since the beginning. Every tragedy. Every loss. Every impossible circumstance that forced the brothers to become who they are. All of it written by a creator who found their story entertaining and never intended to let them win.

Sam and Dean refuse the ending they were written.

This is ultimately what Supernatural is about. Not the monsters. Not the mythology. The question of whether the story you were handed gets to be the story you live — or whether you can put down the script and write your own.

The answer the show gives is the only answer it could have given.

I ugly cried. No apologies.

The Verdict

Watch it from episode one. All fifteen seasons. Even the ones that test your patience — and there are a couple. Stay with it.

Because Supernatural is not just a show about brothers hunting monsters. It is a show about what it means to choose someone over and over across every version of the story. About the Law of Compensation playing out across fifteen seasons — every sacrifice recorded, every act of love counted, the account never empty even when it looks like everything has been lost. About the gods — all of them — and what happens when the created finally look the creator in the eye and refuse to be the story he wrote for them.

And it is a show about brothers.

The best kind.

This one is for Trever.
